TOOTHED WHALES AND BALEEN WHALES There are many species of whales,but according to the way they feed,they are of two types -Baleen whales and toothed whales. Baleen whales are large whales,with big heads and mouths.However they have no teeth. Instead they have comb-like fibrous structures in their mouths,known as baleens. These whales capture their food by swimming towards their prey with their mouth open and use their baleen bristles to filter large amounts of fish,krill,shrimp,octopus and other sea sediments from the water. They then expel the water out of their mouth -often using their tongue-while leaving their prey stuck in the baleen bristles. Toothed whales on the other hand,have proper teeth.
