RAYS OF HOPE The rain pattered down against the window with the rhythm of a steady heartbeat. Vinay watched the view blur from sight as the glass pane slowly fogged up. He could barely make out the deserted road that stretched on infinitely. The street lights appeared like distance stars watching over the world vigilantly. Had it been another time he would have been home with his family right now. But here he was in the same old hospital room filled with the scent of astringent. But what to do, who would have thought that a pandemic would lay its icy grip over the entire world. Even the little town of Rajapuram wasn’t spared from the fear and frenzy that the pandemic had inflicted everywhere. It was the sharp chime of the alarm that woke Dr. Vinay from his thoughts. The clock showed 11.30 pm. Time for his night time rounds. Dr. Vinay went from room to room, carefully noting down the vitals of the patients and making sure every one was fine. All most all the patients were asleep. It was only in the very last room that the lights were on. Dr. Vinay entered inside the room to see that the old aged patient Mr. Ravi was wide awake. In a voice filled with concern the Doctor asked “Mr. Ravi, Are you Okay? Why are you awake, any discomfort?” Mr. Ravi looked up with tear filled eyes. The old man seemed to be quite emotional. He replied in a quivering voice “ Doctor , I was having some trouble sleeping. I was feeling worried and distressed.” The Doctor nodded in understanding. This prompted the old man to continue “Doctor, do you think I will survive? Will I be able to meet my family again?” he asked in a voice filled with grief. “Mr. Ravi, please take a look at this article”. Dr. Vinay said picking up a newspaper from the stand. Mr. Ravi looked down to see the picture of a very old couple. The title read - 93-year-old and 88-year couple recover at Medical College. “Mr. Ravi this couple recently recovered from the infection, defying all odds under the care of Doctors and nurses of the Medical College. Like them thousands of people from different age groups have recovered from this disease and have left the hospital safely in our country. “the Doctor said. “Your vitals are steady and your health has improved a lot. I am sure that you will recover soon and be able to go home to your family. Don’t worry. All of us – the Doctors, nurses, health care workers and Govt are working day and night for all of you. We have pledged ourselves to your betterment. We are sure that if we fight against this together with strong belief and apt precautions, we will definitely be able to defeat this pandemic. “Do not let go of hope!” “Thank you, Doctor, it really means a lot to me. May God bless you” the old man said. “Goodnight Mr. Ravi” Dr. Vinay said as he switched off the lights in the room. By the time Doctor Vinay reached his room the rain had stopped pouring and the window was no longer fogged up. “How can a Doctor regret the sleepless nights spent away from family on duty when it leads to peaceful sleep and a safe return home to many others!” he thought to himself. He noticed that the dark clouds were slowly clearing up, revealing a full moon. Moonlight coursed through, lighting up the world around, basking him in rays of hope.
