Ramu’s Adventure

Rain was falling down heavily in the courtyard of Ramu’s house. Ramu was sitting in the verandah folding a piece of paper. He made a nice paper boat. He ran to his house. He took out a small doll that he loved very much. Now, the rain was getting fiercer. When it subsided after a long time, he took out a cap and ran out of his house. He put it in a ditch which was full of water. The cap floated like a boat.

Behind his house there was a thick wood. Its inside was not visible and was a mystery to the people in the neighbourhood. No one dared to go inside the woods. Ramu sat for a long time on the wet sand. He felt so cold, he went back to the house and drank a glass of water and sat in a chair. Then he thought about his boat and doll. He ran to the ditch. There he saw a small passage where the water flowed swiftly and disappeared into the woods. He thought that his boat has sailed through the passage. He followed the passage not knowing where it was leading him to. Poor Ramu! he was trapped among the trees and wines. Yet still he kept moving. He saw his boat lying toppled on the ground. He accidently stepped on a stone. And the next thing was that he remembered was that he was falling down. He didn’t know where this hole would lead him to. He was afraid that death was staring at him.

Suddenly he fell into the ground. Though no injury was caused, he was totally confused. Ramu looked up but could see only darkness and there was no light to be seen anywhere. Ramu crept forward a little, when he found a few candles lying on he ground and also a candlestick. Though very tired he moved forward and after a while he found a table and a chair beside the narrow passage. There was an ink bottle and a quill inside it. Beside it there was a piece of paper. He took out the piece of paper. It was actually a map with some words scribbled on it. He couldn’t understand what words scribbled meant. He put the map in his pocket and continued his journey. After walking a little he saw two caverns. He didn’t know which of the two would lead him out of the cave.

After a while he heard a rattling sound in the cave on the right. Ramu thought that it might be the chance to get out of this nightmare. He moved fast towards the right cave, entered it hesitatingly. When he neared the end of the cavern, he saw a rattle snake staring at him. He shivered and ran forward in great fear. But, further ahead, he found another two caverns. They were extremely dark. Nothing inside could be seen. Anyhow, the rattling sound came nearer and nearer. He decided to go into the left one and moved fast towards it. After a long time the rattling sound came nearer. He stopped, sighed, and then continued moving forward. When he came to the end of the cavern he found a square opening above. He saw footholds also on the sides of the opening. He climbed up and saw a narrow passage. He got into the narrow passage. As walked a little forward, to his surprise he found a old dark shelf by the side of the narrow passage. He found a bronze chest was locked.

Suddenly he thought about the map and wondered whether it had any link to the chest. He took out the map and in the dim light he could read the title-GOOD FORTUNE. He was confused. But still he has to open the chest to see what is inside it.Anxiety built up in his mind. Then he kneeled down to search for the key.He noticed an old ruined paper underneath the chest. The paper said-‘If you are here to seek the good fortune’s key, you may find it in the keeper of the key’s room’.Ramu scratched his head.”Now where is this room.” he said to himself. After a whole look around he saw a tiny door behind the bronze chest. He knocked at the tiny door.A rat opened the door and squeeked “Raggazo (which means boy),oh I am sorry you might don’t know Italian. Are you here for the key to open the good fortune.”Yes”said Ramu who was amazed to see a talking rat.The rat handed a small golden key.Ramu said thanks and headed for the chest. When he looked back the tiny door has dissapeared. He opened the chest. Inside the chest there were a lot of diamonds, rubies, emeralds and a golden crown. He rubbed the chest’s body, on the body a large bright word was written ‘GOOD FORTUNE’.

The chest was heavy, but he carried it on his back and climbed up. When he reached the top he found it closed. He was totally embarassed. But when accidentally he put his left foot on a foothold nearby, the roof automatically opened with a creaking noise! The outside world became visible. With great relief he stepped out the hole. The roof had been closed with some wooden slabs attached to the tree nearest to the stone. He saw the stream of water which flowed directly to opening of the cavern. He followed the stream carrying the bronze chest in his arms. He reached his home in great joy.

What an unexpected adventure. But he regretted that he had forgotten Sone thing.

               His paper boat!!!
