Is the fate of the world at stake?
“The weak point of every life sustaining planet is the existence of an organism with high intellectual power.”
                                                                                                   -Stephen Hawking

It is estimated that life originated in this world 3.5 billion years ago. It took another million years of evolution and extinction to make it like the one we see now, the world which has made progress in science, technology, Literature , culture and most interestingly, in the ways which could make us extinct. Yes, you read it right; the world in which we are living is not at all a safe one. There are several dangers hanging above our head that could destroy us all on earth and I will only blame the species Homo sapiens, including me, for these threats.

To me, the top two things which concern the existence of our ecosystem is global warming and nuclear war. While global warming is a slow poison, nuclear war is a cyanide. Global warming probably started with industrialization and as a matter of fact, it has a lion share in crises such as extinction of species, melting of polar ice, climate change and rise in sea level. It may be a major threat, but we still have time to stop it. Nuclear war is nothing but a war which utilizes nuclear weapons. Very simple. But what is complicated is the power of weapons used in it. Nuclear power is really a force to be reckoned with. If used righteously this tech is a boon and a solution to many of our energy crises. But alas! The thirst for power has propelled man (not all of us) to create weapons of devastation and chaos out of it. Nuclear weapons are really a symbol of how lust for power has made man mad. The only nuclear bombings which the world has seen so far is the one at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, where the primitive forms of atom bombs were used. If that old one can do this much damage, just imagine the power of ones made after a half century. The real danger is that it will only take a computer error or quarrel among those maintaining the weapons to trigger a global war. With even the weak countries acquiring nuclear weapons now, it’s very difficult to avoid the possibility of a nuclear war.

Like Hawking said, the bane of every life sustaining planet is a species which has evolved a well-developed brain. They will overpower the rest of the organisms and finally lead to the destruction of the planet. Though having acquired a developed brain most of us still struggle or rather fear to accept the lethality of our actions. We try to uplift our economy by polluting the Earth even though we know deep inside that there won’t be any economy if there is no ecosystem.

Even if we could avoid a nuclear war and stop global warming, threats will keep on emerging as long as humans don’t cease their stupid actions based on selfish motives. There won’t be any Noahs or matsyavatharas to save us from an apocalypse, so it’s better we use our brain and think over it.
