BURNASSERY IN KANNUR
കണ്ണൂർ നഗരത്തിന്റെ തിരക്കുകളിൽ നിന്നും ആരവങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നും അകന്ന് കടലിൽ നിന്നും വരുന്ന കുളിർമയുള്ള കാറ്റേറ്റ് ബർണശ്ശേരി എന്ന കൊച്ചു പ്രദേശത്ത് ഞങ്ങളുടെ വിദ്യാലയം നില കൊള്ള‌ുന്നു. ഒട്ടേറെ ചരിത്ര വസ്‌തുതകൾ ഉറങ്ങിക്കിടക്കുന്ന സ്ഥലമാണ് ബർണ്ണശ്ശേരി. പല ഭാഷകള‌ുടേയും വർണ്ണങ്ങള‌ുടേയും സമ‌ൂഹം ഇവിടെ വസിക്ക‌ുന്നതിനാൽ വർണ്ണശ്ശേരിയായി അറിയപ്പെട‌ുകയും ക്രമേണ അത് ബർണ്ണശ്ശേരിയാവ‌ുകയും ചെയ്‌ത‌ു. പോർച്ചുഗീസുകാരിൽ നിന്ന് ക്രിസ്‌തീയ വിശ്വാസം സ്വീകരിച്ചവര‌ുടെ പിൻതലമുറക്കാര‌ും പോർച്ചുഗീസുകാര‌ും മറ്റ് യൂറോപ്യൻ വംശജര‌ുടെ പിൻതലമ‌ുറക്കാരായ ആംഗ്ളോ ഇന്ത്യൻസും കാനറ (മംഗലാപുരം) ക്രിസ്ത്യാനികള‌ുടെ പിൻതലമുറക്കാര‌േയും നമുക്ക് ഇവിടെ കാണാനാക‌ും. മലയാളം, പോർച്ചുഗീസ്, ഇംഗ്ളീഷ്, കൊങ്കിണി എന്നീ ഭാഷകൾ സംസാരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു ജനസമൂഹമാണ് ഇവിടെ അധിവസിക്കുന്നത്. ബർണ്ണശ്ശേരിയിലെ കത്തോലിക്കാ കുട‌ുംബങ്ങൾക്ക് ഡിക്ര‌ൂസ്, ഫെർണാണ്ടസ് എന്നീ കുടുംബ പേരുകളാണ് ഉള്ളത്. ആംഗ്ളോ ഇന്ത്യൻസിന് അവരുടെ പൂർവികരായ പോർച്ചുഗീസുകാരുടേയും ഡച്ചുകാരുടേയും ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാരുടേയും കുടുംബ പേരുകളാണ് ഉള്ളത്. കേനന്ന‌ൂർ കന്റോൺമെന്റിലെ സിവിൽ ഏരിയയാണ് ബർണ്ണശ്ശേരി, 32-ഏക്കർ. 400-ൽ അധികം കുട‌ുംബങ്ങളിലായി 1700-ഓളം ജനങ്ങൾ താമസിക്കുന്നു.
Geography
The Cannanore Cantonment, situated in Burnassery or Burnshire(the anglicized name) declared as Cantonment w.e.f. 1-1-1938. This is the only cantonment in Kerala. It is situated on Malabar West Coast. Western and Southern Boundaries aligned by Arabian sea.

Notable persons
Manuel Frederick
Manuel Frederick (born 20 October 1947) is an Indian field hockey player who played as goalkeeper from Kannur district in Kerala. He won a bronze medal at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. He is the 1st Keralite to win an Olympic medal. The second Keralite to win an Olympic medal is P. R. Sreejesh who won a Bronze on 5th Aug 2021 in Tokyo Olympics. Both medals for Kerala have come via the goalkeepers of the National Hockey Team.
