INSIDE THE WALLS Along the vast dark sky, the moon shone brighter than ever. The stars where twinkling like diamonds. There was silence all over. Nalini was sitting hopefully in the balcony watching the peaceful ,dark sky. Her face was drained of colour. "Maybe....Tomorrow...My mom will let me play. It would be fun! But...why did mom restrict me from playing with my friends?" thought watching the vacant streets. Nalini completed her first grade this year and she sits in the balcony in wonder since 4 days. She lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Her school had ended before April earlier than usual. The school days were fun. "Mom told the school was shut.Why?" Big question in front of her without answer. The Summer vacation had started. Each day was gloomy than the other which passed boring. Some days had already passed. She stopped looking into the Clock and Calender. She wanted some joy. But her mother didn't let her play with other children. Neither of any friends did play, nor they talk each other. As days passed she was curious. "What is happening all around us mom?" "Nothing." "All shut in their homes. There are no vehicles in the streets too." Questions passed through her minds one after other. She had lot more to ask. "Nalini! All this is because of a pandemic that has spread all over. Corona Virus is spreading worldwide." "How does it spread mummy?" "Through contact. Once you touch the infected, the virus enters your body, you get infected." " Is there any medicine for this pandemic?" "No. No medicine. It is viral. So you have to keep distance from people and never touch any outsiders.Wash hands frequently with soap or use sanitisers. And even wear mask when you go out." Nalini heeded. She heard everything "Then, Shouldn't I touch my friends?" "Sorry Nalini. You can't touch them too. Now don't worry about that. It's temporary. Only social distancing itself prevents from the disease." Nalini confused. She walked to the balcony. The last words turned Nalini pale. It echoed in her ears as she was sitting in balcony, staring the vacant streets. She couldn't imagine keeping away from friends. She felt the hardness of loneliness. Nothing to do.... Nothing to speak.... Nothing to play.... Finished reading twice or thrice.... A blanket of fear around..... These 20 days were horrifying...... HOW MANY MORE???? Today, early morning she came out to the balcony. Her face brightened with joy for the first time in 20 days. She felt the changes in the nature. Fresh cool air, No dust, No smoke, No honkings of vehicles, No pollution, No sound. She hadn't experienced this before. She was happy to see the birds. "Wow! Colourful" " Sweet songs they sing." She never saw this ever before. Small plants had sprouted in both sides of the streets.And she could see Peacocks, Parrots, varieties of colourful birds, even a herd of Elephants and Deer, even rabbits wandered freely in the streets without the fear of humans. She forgot her sadness and started to enjoy the bloom of Nature. "Nature is recovering from the devastating human intervention." She thought. "A day will come, when nature itself will cure everything!" She thought and smiled with hope.
