VACCINES-helping hands of DEFENSE! Edward Jenner, an english doctor started immunization in 1978. He found vaccine against small pox. Small pox was a deadly disease that wiped out many lives during his period. He observed that people affected by cow pox escaped from the attack of small pox. He discovered the vaccine from the pus of a cow pox patient, by injecting into body of an eight year old boy. This became a milestone in history which eradicated small pox. The immunization programs got the name vaccination from the latin word 'Vacca' meaning cow. In honour of expiriments of Edward Jenner. Immunization is the artificial method to make the defense cells alert against the attack of pathogens. Vaccines are substances used for this purpose. Vaccines can be components feom alive or dead or neutralized germs. It can also be neutralized toxins or cellular parts of pathogen. These act as antigens when they enter into the body and antibodies are produced against them. This retain in the body which in future protects us from many diseases.National immunization schedule of preventive vaccines are to be taken at different stages of childhood from birth. Some of the important vaccines are Bacille Calmette - Guerin (B.C.G), Oral Polio Vaccine (O.P.V), Pentavalent, Measles Mumps and Rubella (M.M.R), Tetanus Toxoid (T.T).
