THREATS TO MOUNTAINS As we all know threats to mountains are becoming more vulnerable nowadays. In past mountains were considered to be formidable barriers. There were no roads or railways , and one had to go on foot or horse back to cross a mountain or reach its interior. Both were difficulty, and as a result, the beauty, plant and animal life of mountainous areas remained largely untouched. Today, however things are different. The modern engineering have taken roads and railways into the heart of the heart of the mountains, and over them. This progress however, has not always been good for the mountain people. Their traditional nature friendly lifestyle has changed, forest fires have been started to clear land for cultivation, trees are cut, wild life is destroyed and tourists come in large numbers, polluting the beautiful landscape. The mountains are really paying a high price for the march of progress, and if drastic action is not taken, they may soon turn into barren wastelands. In many countries of the world, dams are built across swift flowing mountain rivers to produce hydroelectricity. Mountain valleys are ideal for building dams. There steep sides make it easy to build a dam across them. Dams actually serve two purposes- they bring electricity, and provide for irrigation as well. However dams do great harm to mountains. Entire valleys are flooded, the natural course of rivers is blocked, plant and animal life is destroyed, and the people living in these valleys are deprived of their homes. Global warming is caused artificially by increased human activity. As a result of this over the past 100 years, mountain glaciers in all areas of the world have decreased in size. Rainfall and snowfall have decreased, so mountain rivers are shrinking. Since mountain rivers are a major source of the world’s water supply, this can prove disastrous. There are also other reasons that cause threat to mountains such as rapid changes in cultivation on mountain slopes, causing pollution due to tourism etc. So, according to above reasons we should save the mountains from these threats.
