St Thomas College HSS Thrissur
St. Thomas College Higher Secondary School, Thrissur is an Aided Higher Secondary School located in Thrissur City, the Cultural Capital of Kerala State,in India. Founded in 1889 by Fr. Medleycott in the early-20th century, this School played a very important role in the development of Kerala. It is conducted by the Arch Diocese of Trichur. It was inaugurated by the Rt. Rev. Dr. John Menachery, the Bishop and Vicar Apostolic of Trichur in April 1919 for the service of the people in the field of higher education. The stated objective is not only intellectual excellence and imparting of skills but mainly formation of good citizens of character and ability, committed to the service of their fellow men.
St. Thomas College Higher Secondary School is the oldest Catholic School in Kerala with 120 years of existence situated in the heart of Thrissur City, the cultural capital of Kerala State in India. This school was established in 1889 by first vicar Apostle of Trichur , Rt. Rev Dr. Adolphus Edwin Medlycott , PhD and then onwards this school is run by the Archdiocese of Trichur. It was at first only a lower Secondary School, primarily intended for resident ecclesiastical students. Subsequently it became a High School in 1894 under the managership of Fr. Zambanelli, an Italian missionary, the naming of the school as “College” by and that too, after St. Thomas, The Apostle of India was therefore, symbolic of the mission the school was to shoulder in the subsequent years. Rt. Rev Dr. Adolphus Edwin Medlycott purchased the present site of the college appointed Fr. Paul Alappatt ,PhD as the Manager and Rector of the institution in 1895. In April 1919 when the institution has already 29 years old in its service to education and then St. Thomas high School formally became a second grade college with Fr. John Palocaren as the first Principal. It was Fr. John Palocaren M.A (Edn)- a member of the staff of the school and subsequently the Headmaster of the school in August 1918- who planned and piloted the “College Scheme”. The junior intermediate class was opened on 8th June 1919 with 96 students and 5 teachers and in August 1919 the inaugural ceremony of the St. Thomas College was held under the presidency of His Highness Sir Sri Rama Varma, The Maharaja of Cochin.
In 2000, this school has risen to the status of Higher Secondary School. The School has celebrated its centenary in 1989 and the institution has completed 120th years of service in the field of Education in 2009.
