HUMAN IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT Each and every activity that humans do have some effect on the environment. Human activities like burning of fossil fuels, over use of natural resources at present time, cutting down of trees, destruction of ecological balance of the earth etc., cause degradation of the environment. Environmentalists keep giving us warning of the danger, some of our human activities have on the environment. Some common effects of human activities on environment include decreased water quality, increased pollution and green house gas emissions, depletion of natural resources etc. Human activities also contribute to global climate change. Of these some are direct result of human activities while others are secondary effects that are part of a series of actions and reactions. Burning of fossil fuels release carbon dioxide which traps the heat radiated from the earth’s surface. Thus this increases the global temperature. This rise in global temperature causes melting of glaciers which leads to a rise in sea level. Deforestation causes lose of animal habitats and so animals come out of the forests to our towns and cities. This will cause several epidemics. Our natural environment makes life possible on earth and our cultural environment helps to define who we are. It is therefore essential that our population and economic growth are environmentally sustainable. Scientific research has played and will continue to play, an essential part in solving environmental problems.
