LIFE VALUES The values by which we live, and the values which we convey to the children, are our most important social issues. Nothing more powerful determines the shape of a child's life than his or her values, internal process, beliefs, sense of right and wrong. A child's values more than his or her race, class, sex, ethnicity, neighbourhood, genes, or background-will determine that child's face. And it is given to families pre-eminently to provode those values. Not all teachers are parents, but all parents are teachers-children's first teachers, children's all but indispensable teachers. And those parents should be able to spend their children to schools that afform the most deeply held conviction of parents. Education should not be allowed to usurp the authority from parents. The child is not a ward given to the state for its nurture. The chlid is a gift of God, given in trust to his or her parents. Our schools should treat our young people as gifts of God, not as subjects of social experimentation or as young animals in heart. I believe the family to be our most important institution. In our time, efforts must be made to preserve and strengthen the family, heroic efforts, it necessary. When i talk about traditional family values, i am not using code words, seeking a political wedge, or speaking to demean or to be little others. I'm seeking to honour and to affirm what is best in us.
