Personal Hygiene

Personal hygiene is the habit of keeping things and surroundings clean. It is always associated with virtuous character. Hence the saying, ‘Cleanliness is next to Godliness’ came into being. All great men of all times have stressed on the importance of leading a clean and morally upright life for the attainment of all-round happiness. Cleanliness as a virtue has been part of Indian culture since ancient times. Vedas have laid strict instructions for students and spiritual aspirants to strictly observe cleanliness of body, mind and thoughts for faster progress in the path of self-actualisation and enlightenment. Hygiene practices are used in medical and everyday life as preventive measures to minimise the incidence and spread of diseases. Parasites, worms, scabies, sores, tooth decay, diarrhoea and dysentery are caused due to lack of personal hygiene. In the early 18s, a new pandemic hit the globe due to lack of personal hygiene . Cholera. It is an infectious disease that causes severe watery diarrhoea, which can lead to dehydration and even death if untreated. It is caused by eating food or drinking water contaminated with a bacterium called Vibrio cholera. Seven cholera pandemics have occurred in the past 200 years, with the first pandemic originating in India in 1817. Additionally, there have been many documented cholera outbreaks, such as a 1991–1994 outbreak in South America and, more recently, the 2016–20 Yemen cholera outbreak. Hygiene and health are a matter of life and death. Diseases associated with poor sanitation and unsafe water accounted for about 10 percent of the global burden of disease, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). There are no risks to practising good hygiene. Poor hygiene, on the other hand, increases the risk for bacterial, viral, and parasitic infections. Practising good hygiene requires you to perform a series of basic personal hygiene habits on a regular basis. Wash your body and hair often to remove bacteria and dead skin cells. Brush your teeth after every meal, or at least twice per day. Flossing and brushing regularly help prevent the accumulation of bacteria in the mouth that increases the risk for gum disease. Spending time around those who fail to demonstrate good hygiene can be unpleasant due to factors such as bad breath and body odour, and it increases your own risk for disease and infection. Poor hygiene can have negative consequences on your social life and relationships — including business relationships. Being clean and well-groomed can help you feel more confident and comfortable both physically and mentally. Feeling dirty, oily, and unfresh not only puts your physical health at risk, but it can trigger negative emotions of discomfort, irritability, and anxiety. Poor hygiene can affect your mood, your interactions with others, and the way you feel about yourself. Mental disorders highly affects ones hygiene. In such a situation one generally prefers not to keep up with any hygienic practices or get obsessed with hygiene. Generally OCD makes a person to get obsessed about being clean and neat while depression makes them unhygienic and fatigue. Now , in a situation like this we all should maintain good hygiene. Everyone can slow the spread of COVID-19 by washing their hands frequently, covering their coughs, putting tissues straight into a bin, avoiding touching their eyes, nose and mouth, cleaning regularly used objects and surfaces and ventilating their home or work space , all these are basic hygienic practice. Basic hygiene measures may seem obvious, but they are important.
