Covid-19 a brief overview       On 1st December 2019 case of an unknown decease was reported in Wuhan, Hubei, China. It was reported to a 55 year old lady in Wuhan.After many investigations they found that the case had links to the Hunan Seafood Wholesale Market.And they confirmed that the new and infamous disease have a zoonotic origin.But the origin is still a mystery. The new virus strain was named as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (Sars-Cov-2). As the new virus moved to other countries, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared Public Health Emergency of International Concern on 30 January 2020.The decease was renamed as Covid-19. The first active case of Covid-19 in India was reported on 30 January 2020. It was reported in our homeland Kerala. Three students who returned from Wuhan were the first patients. Then the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare took up this situation and acted immediately to prevent a pandemic situation in India right from the first case itself. On 22 March the Honorable Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi declared a 14 hour voluntary public curfew known as ‘Janta Curfew’. The whole country stayed in their homes for 14 hours.As for the world’s second largest populated country this is very extra ordinary. On 24 March the Prime Minister announced a nationwide lockdown for 21 days. This order shook the whole 130 crore Indians. It is the first time ever something like this has happened in India. People were eager to get out of their houses once the 21 days of staying locked down at home ended. Even if they hung ‘Home, Sweet Home ‘ posters, they couldn’t afford this much sweetness. But they were disappointed when the lock down was extended for another 17 days, till May 3, 2020. The lock down helped India to contain the spread of the virus to a great extent. Compared to several other nations we are in a better position. As on 3rd May, our neighbor Pakistan has 19,103 cases and 440 deaths. The United States is at the top with more than 1 million cases and more than 65,000 deaths. No Medicine or vaccine has yet been discovered to prevent or treat this deadly virus. The existence of the very human race is at stake. Almost all nations are affected by it especially the European Nations and the US. The health workers all over the world are fighting hard contain the number of deaths and to cure as many patients as possible. They are the real heroes now. Without them we would never even reached up to this level of security and safety. The numbers are still rising in many parts of the world. But we will outcome this pandemic and we will be back again to our routine activities , but will have acquired new habits like wearing face masks while going out of home, keeping social distance and washing hands with soap/ sanitizing. With safe habits and self discipline and concern for others, we are sure to overcome this situation just like we overcame the furious floods and the dangerous Nipah virus.
