The full moon The clock struck twelve at midnight. Poonam was awake on bed. She is the leader of class VIII. She had introduced an idea of campaign against tobacco in the school led by the class. But some of her friends discouraged her and criticized her for being hyperactive. Poonam decided to exit her leadership. “Let Manjusha take it up”, she said scornfully. “She thinks that she’s accepted better”. “Poonam you have been elected by your class”, her mom said encouragingly. “Is it not the sign of acceptance?” But Poonam was not convinced. “Don’t you think that criticism could make you a better leader?” Mom was not giving up. “But why can’t they understand the importance of the campaign?” Poonam argued. “Let’s go to the terrace”, mom suggested. The full moon was brilliant above spreading milky light over the trees and buildings. A stray dog from the street started howling at the moon disrupting the quietness of the moonlit night. The moon was still smiling unaffected. “Look at the moon”, moon said to the distressed daughter in a sudden inspiration. “You feel you are being unjustly criticised. Well you learn from the moon, people will keep howling at you they’ll try to snap at your heels and they’ll criticize you. The dog kept howling at the moon but the moon keeps shining. Don’t you think that it is better to be criticised than to be ignored. Poonam looked up at the moon. Her face too started shining in the milky light.
