"EARTH FOR FUTURE"
"There is sufficiency in the nature for man's need but not for man's greed"- these words of Mahatma Gandhi is a warning alarm to the present world. We are living in a fast growing world and development is the most essential need of this time. But this 21st century is always urging for the protection of the environment which gives protection to human beings. That's why sustainable development becomes one of the urgent needs of this time.
The degradation of environment is one of the most serious issue that we are facing today. As a famous thinker quoted,"Man has become the cancer of this earth." The illegal human activities and encroachments had created a lot of severe strains in environment. This worsening situation needs an urgent attention. We need to promote development that doesn't destroy our environment. Environment is no one's property to destroy;it's everyone's responsibility to protect.
In this context of environment deterioration, sustainable development should be given due consideration.Various countries have agreed on an ambitious agenda to transform our world by 2030,adopting the 'Sustainable Development Goals[SDGs]' that aim to ensure no one is left behind and everyone benefits from development efforts.'Agenda 2030' is unprecedented in scope and significance.
Globally, the concept of sustainable development received a mass support. The recent increase in the natural calamities provoked us to be more focused on this concept. A natural disaster is a major adverse event resulting from the natural process of earth.Exploitation of the nature in the name of development can be considered as one of the root cause of the recent disasters. The Indonesian earthquakes, Greece wildfires, Pakistan heatwaves,Indian floods, Amazon forest fires etc are the most deadliest disasters of the recent times.Such terrible occurrences create adverse effects not only on the humans but also on the flora and fauna. It can cause loss of life or damage to property and also economic and infrastructure damages.
In India, the circumstances are not so different. All available indicators point to the ecological situation being nothing short of disastrous.Natural ecosystems are under stress and decline across most of the country. Some 10% of the country's wildlife is threatened with extinction;agricultural biodiversity has declined by over 90%;about half of the available water bodies are polluted.Two-thirds of land is degraded to various levels of sub-optimal productivity.Air pollution in several cities is among the world's worst.
As 'Francis Bacon' said,"We can't command nature, except by obeying her".So we need some Eco-friendly measures to tackle this situation. The country has taken several bold steps in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals[SDGs] and to save the country from the havoc of natural calamities. Our country ratified the 'Paris Agreement' which provides a framework for all countries to take action against climate change."The 21st Conference of Parties[COP 21] under the 'United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change [UNFCC] adopted the Paris Agreement on post-2020 actions on climate change.
The renowned environmentalist 'Wangari Mathai' said,"We owe it to ourselves and to the next generation to conserve the environment. So that we can bequeath our children, a sustainable world that benefits all". There are so many dedicated persons who always try to follow these words. The activities of the 16-year old Swedish girl 'Greta Thunberg' on environmental protection and climate change had become an eye-opener to many.Sundarlal Bahuguna,Julia Butterfly Hill,Medha Patkar and many others had dedicated their whole life for the conservation of the environment. We must be inspired by their words and should follow their lead.
The earth doest not belong to the earth. It is our responsibility to conserve this earth and preserve it for the coming generations."Sustainable development is the pathway to the future we want for all.It offers a framework to generate economic growth, social justice, environmental stewardship and strengthen governance". These words of 'Ban Ki Moon' gave us a clear view."Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" should be our prime concern."We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors,we borrow it from our children".So give it back to them without any strains.
