ENVIRONMENTAL HYGIENE AND PREVENTION OF DISEASES

Environment is the surrounding or condition in which a person, animal, or plant lives. Every creature has the right to live in a better environment. But now our environment is polluted by human activities. Almost everyone, at any given time is exposed to some environmental risk factor. World Environmental Day is celebrated on 5th June every year, and is the United Nation’s Day for encouraging worldwide awareness and actions to protect our environment. Our environment is polluted by industry, transport, agriculture and waste materials. Due to the pressures of over consumption population growth, and technology, the bio physical environment is being degraded, sometimes permanently. This has been recognised by the governments and they have begun placing restrains on activities that cause environmental degradation. We can protect our environment by recycling, avoiding plastics from products, conserving water and planting more trees.

Environmental health is the branch of positive health concerned with all aspects of natural and built environment affecting human being. The linkages between health and environment are definitely very strong. Healthy environment is the key for our better health. When we are looking to protect our health, make sure that our leaders, policy makers and ourselves protect the environment. Environment influence our health through air we breathe, the water we drink, radiation and noise. It affects all parts of our body or system and health can be greatly improved by a healthy environment. 25% of the burden of disease is linked to the environment and we are convinced that, if we attack those hazards and we clean up from the environment those risks. If we do interventions at the environmental level that will allow us to have a better and cleaner air, clean and safe water and we will be protected from pesticides or toxic substances that will prevent cancer and other substances.

Environment and environmental hygiene are interrelated to each other. Environmental hygiene or sanitation helps to reduce the incidences of those diseases which are commonly acquired. Many diseases develop due to lack of cleanliness, parasites, worms etc. Diarrhoea and dysentery are caused due to lack of personal hygiene. All these diseases can be prevented by practising cleanliness. Hygiene is a series of practise performed to preserve health we can maintain environmental hygiene by always washing our hands with soaps, always keep our body and surroundings clean.

To prevent the spread of diseases we can practice the following methods:

Always wash our hands with soap or hand wash.
Often get vaccinated, use antibiotics sensibly.
Stay at home, if you have signs or symptoms of any infection or contagious diseases.
Avoid travelling when you are ill.
Always give much care to children and old people.
Always keep the house and surroundings clean.
Use towels or tissues when you sneeze or cough.
If you are infected by any contagious diseases, keep distance from the family members and other people, and use masks.
Don’t share your personal belongings with others.
In short with little commonsense, proper precautions and practicing environmental hygiene, we can avoid contagious diseases and their spreads.
