FLOOD An overflow of a large amount of water which submerges the land is called a flood. Flood can occur when the volume of water in the lakes, rivers, backwaters etc. increase due to seasonal changes such as continuous heavy rainfall or melting of snow. Floods also occur by the breakage of dams caused by the excess quantity of water in the reservoir. Flood causes several damage and destruction of life and environment on either side of the body of water. Oceans can be flood as a result of Tsunami. Tsunami is a series of long high sea waves caused when an earthquake or other eruptions likewise occur under the sea. When some underwater explosions took place, the large mass of water is suddenly replaced. Due to the immense volume of water and the high force from underground, a vast area is submerged in water and destroyed. On December 26, 2004 a Tsunami struck India taking away thousands of lives. Water is the part and parcel of life. Rain brings water. Weather is the source of life. The importance of rain is beyond description. We cannot imagine a world with out rain. There was a heavy shower last winter it was lasted for the whole day. It came unexpectedly. Those who had gone out get soaked. I could hear pedestrians cursing themselves for not keeping umbrellas. Their clothes get stuck to their skins. The cold was so biting. Most of the people remained in doors. Road and streets were full and flooded streams, rivers and ponds over flowed. Flood water raised above the danger marks. Flash flood washed houses and top soil. The low lying areas turned into lakes. The torrential rain was accompanied by cyclone, thunder and lightening. Trees were up rooted and they laid for hours on the roads blocking the traffic rail and road transport came to a stand still. We suffered a power shortage for two days. Many school buildings were collapsed.
