DR. AYATHAN GOPALAN MEMORIAL ENGLISH MEDIUM HIGH SCHOOL.
Dr. Ayathan Gopalan Memorial English Medium High School, also known as "Ayathan School", is a recognized school located in the heart of the city on Chinthavalappu, Jail Road, Calicut. This school was established in memory of Rao Sahib Dr. Ayathan Gopalan, a well-known renaissance leader and social reformer of Kerala. Today, it is the only school in Kerala functioning under the Brahma Samaj, in the Brahma Samaj Mandir(Hall).
HISTORY:
Dr. Ayathan Gopalan (3 March 1861 – 2 May 1948) was a well-known renaissance leader and social reformer, the founder of the Brahmo Samaj and Sugunavardhini movements in Kerala. He founded the first Brahmo Samaj in 1898 at Chinthavalappu, Jail Road, Kozhikode, Kerala. The Brahmo Samaj Mandir (Hall) in Kozhikode is located on the land donated by Kallingal Madathil Rarichan Moopan for constructing Brahmo Samaj. It is registered under the society named as "The Calicut Brahmasamaj, Malabar". This society, founded by Dr. Ayathan Gopalan, includes his children, grandchildren, their descendants, and Brahmo Samaj followers. During the 1950s, the Ram Mohan Cultural Centre was started under the Kozhikode Brahmo Samaj. A large library and a play school were run under it. In 1965, a kindergarten was started with 15 children. In 1966, permission for the LP School was obtained from the government and it was later named "Brahma Samajam School". The locals called it "Samaj School". This school became more popular under this name. In 1969, a full English medium LP School was approved by the government and it was renamed as Dr. Ayathan Gopalan Memorial School by the Kozhikode Brahmo Samaj Trustee. Since this school, located in the heart of Kozhikode, and could not acquire more land, only temporary approval was given to the U. P School. In 1991, permanent approval was granted by the government for U.P. School. In 1995, the Brahmo Samaj Trust upgraded it to a high school. In March 1998, the first SSLC batch was released with just 3 students. In 1999, it received permanent high school recognition from the government and is still functioning in the Brahma Samaja Mandir as a well known school in town. Today, the office of Ayathan School is functioning in the Brahma Samaj mandir(building). This is the only existing school functioning under the Brahma Samaj in Kerala.
