ENVIRONMENT- THE FOUNDATION OF HUMAN LIFE

Earth is the only planet where life is found in the solar system. So, it is necessary to protect our earth and its environment for the existence of life. An Environment is everything that is around us, which includes both living and non-living things such as soil, water, animals and plants, which adapt themselves to their surroundings. It is nature's gift that helps in nourishing the life on the earth.

Importance of environment protection

The act of protecting the environment from being polluted is called environmental protection. The main objective of environmental protection is to protect the environment or natural resources for the future. In this century we, the people are continuously harming the environment in the name of development. Now we have reached in such a situation that we can’t survive for long on this planet without environmental protection. So, we all should concentrate on environmental protection.

Environmental protection refers to the act of protecting the environment from being destroyed. The health of our mother earth is deteriorating day by day. The human being is mostly responsible for environmental degradation on this blue planet. Environmental pollution has reached to that extent that we can’t recover from it. But we can definitely stop the environment from being polluted more. Thus the term environmental protection arises. In India, we have an environmental protection law. But still, the growth of man-made environmental pollution has not been seen controlled.

It is important to protect the environment because man-made disruptions to ecosystems can cause extinction, because pollution creates dangers for both animals and people, and because mankind owes the natural world a moral obligation. If the environment collapses there will be no life on the earth. In the name of upgrade of lifestyle, the human being is causing harm to the environment. In this era of development, our environment is facing a lot of destruction. It has become very much necessary to stop the condition from getting worse than what it is now. Thus there arises an awareness of environmental protection in the world.

Some factors like the growth of population, illiteracy, deforestation are responsible for environmental pollution on this earth. The human being is the only animal on this earth that plays an active role in the destruction of the environment. So it is none but only human being can play a vital role in the conservation of the environment.

Environmental degradation

Environmental degradation is one of the largest threats that are being looked at in the world today. Environmental degradation is the disintegration of the earth or deterioration of the environment through consumption of assets, for example, air, water and soil; the destruction of environments and the eradication of wildlife. It is characterized as any change or aggravation to nature’s turf seen to be pernicious or undesirable. There are a number of different techniques that are being used to prevent environmental degradation, including environmental resource protection and general protection efforts.

The main causes of environmental degradation are Land Disturbance, Pollution, Overpopulation, Landfills, Deforestation and Natural Causes. Main effects of environmental degradation are Impact on Human Health, Loss of Biodiversity, Ozone Layer Depletion, Loss for Tourism Industry, Economic Impact etc.

Ways to protect our environment We can protect our environment by the following ways 1. Reduce, reuse, and recycle. 2. Volunteer. 3. Educate 4. Conserve water 5. Use long-lasting light bulbs 6. Plant a tree.

Constitutional provision for Environmental protection

The Constitution of India has a number of provisions demarcating the responsibility of the Central and State governments towards Environmental Protection. The state's responsibility with regard to environmental protection which stated that “The states shall endeavour to protect and improve the environment and to safeguard the forest and wildlife of the country".( Article 48-A)”. “It shall be the duty of every citizen of India to protect and improve the natural environment including forests, lakes, rivers, and wildlife and to have compassion for living creatures" is included as the fundamental duties under Article 51-A (g) of the constitution. Article 21 of the constitution is a fundamental right, which states that "No person shall be deprived of his life or personal liberty except according to the procedure established by law".

Conclusion

It is necessary to protect our environment for the existence of our life. We can protect our environment and Mother Nature for the future generations by observing the following days such as World environment Day, World health day, Earth day, Water day, Population day and make them aware about the significance of the need of environmental protection.

The remarkable growth of technological progress has negative impact on the ecological state of our planet. The work of factories and plants and the extraction of natural resources result in serious environmental problems and need radical actions for environmental rehabilitation and protection. We should contribute every day to the preservation of our natural environment.

Environmental problems should be handled by the united efforts of the global community. Nowadays, a lot of international summits, conferences, and presentations are held to deal with recycling, waste treatment, and water and soil contamination. We should always remember that environmental pollution is an incurable disease. It can only be prevented. So, let`s take care and oath to protect our environment.
