COVID-19 Lock down and India

We are currently facing the pandemic of the century,COVID-19. It has been over several weeks, that we are in lock down which is the biggest of its kind in world. By far, the pandemic has claimed over 1.5 lac lives all over the world. Scientists says the effectiveness of lock down for slowing down its transmission takes about 3 weeks,as the incubation period of the virus could extend to two weeks. It is highly transmittable and can evade immune system for a longer period and thus can spread even without the infected person seemingly sick. WHO declared COVID-19 as a pandemic on March 11 but it wasn't a health emergency and was no need for panic scenario in India. On march24, PM announced 21 days lock down, but by the night of his address,India recorded 564 cases, which is a 6 times jump in less than 2 weeks and the death toll was 11. Since the lock down, confirmed cases has risen 25 times to over 14,000 and death toll has been a 40 fold. April 8, India's death toll was 25 deaths a day or 1-2% of the confirmed cases. But on the other hand recovery rates has raised to about 80% by this time. Number of cases reporting in Kerala is decreasing rapidly day by day and the nearby states of Tamil Nadu,Andhra Pradesh,Telengana are also showing figuresbof hope. However, a region is said to have stabilised only if no new cases are reported for 28 days- and currently not a single state in India can be included into this position. India may have to continue dealing frequent COVID-19 outbreaks, rather than expecting decisively stamping out the disease during an extended lock down.
