MAHATMA GANDHI {1869-1948}

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, or the Mahatma as he is called is the father of the nation. Born on October 2nd, 1869, at Porbandar Gujarat, he married Kasturba. In 1893 he left India for South Africa and fought for the civil rights of the Indians there. In 1894, he founded the Natal Indian Congress. In 1901 he returned to India to see his motherland under the misrule of British. He took the pledge to lead the nation in its quest for freedom. He gave shape to Satyagraha model of struggle in 1901, and later on in his efforts to fight the British armed with the weapons of peace and non-violence. In the midst of the struggle for Indians freedom, he was many times arrested and sends to jail. He became Mahatma, or the Great soul, to every Indian for his unrelenting struggle for Indian’s freedom. On the fateful day of January 30th, 1948, he breathed his last after being shot by the fanatic Nathuram Godse.
