History of PTMHS Kodiyathur

Founding and Early Years (1979–1990s)

PTM Higher Secondary School, Kodiyathur—named in honour of Pookoya Thangal—was established in 1979 under the Ernad Muslim Educational Association (EMEA). It was founded with the aim of providing accessible education to the students of Kodiyathur and surrounding regions, at a time when higher education opportunities were very limited locally.

The school began in a modest setting at the Karakutty madrassa before moving to a dedicated campus as student enrollment grew. During the early years, PTMHS played a crucial role in improving educational access for rural children, especially girls, many of whom previously had to discontinue schooling after primary classes.

Growth and Development (1990s–2010s)

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, PTMHS expanded steadily in both infrastructure and academic capacity. It gained a strong reputation for scholastic achievements and excellence in youth festivals, sports, arts, and work-experience programs.

The school’s NSS unit became one of its proudest features, actively engaging in social service initiatives within the community and earning recognition for its contributions.

Support from the management, PTA, and alumni association (PHOSA) significantly strengthened the school’s progress during this period.

Upgrade to Higher Secondary (2014 Onwards)

In the academic year 2014–15, PTMHS Kodiyathur was upgraded to a Higher Secondary School, introducing Commerce and Science streams. Modern science laboratories and improved classrooms were established to support the new curriculum.

By this time, the school had grown to one of the largest institutions in the region, with a student strength of more than two thousand.

Achievements and Recognition

Over the years, the school has earned notable distinctions in academics, arts, sports, and cultural festivals at district and state levels.

Students from PTMHS have competed in national-level sports events, particularly in football, and the school has often been recognized for its achievements in languages, performing arts, and project-based events.
