Some creative thoughts during lock down Now we are facing a serious pandemic, viz. Covid 19. So many Measures are being taken by our government especially by the health department to control the spread of the disease. Due to the seriousness of covid 19, we are forced to remain at home through lockdown. Schools are closed. Now we are spending our time with our parents at home. Since we are students, we have to think and do something for the benefit of our society . At first we have to think of our home city, Kochi. We are now presenting some of our ideas to keep our Kochi green and clean by which some of the problems can be solved. Kochi is developing at a rapid pace. Population is increasing beyond limit. But here we have scarcity of water, and we are troubled with flood, drought, mosquitos and improper drainage system. 1. Scarcity of water. Resources in the state are being managed by the kerala water authority. But it finds it hard to meet the needs of the people. Increasing number of residential buildings, villas, flats and houses are beyond the control of the authorities. The proportion of available water and population is not equal. In Kochi, we cannot depend entirely on Kerala water authority to supply drinking water. So we put forward our ideas to overcome the scarcity of water. a) During monsoon we get enough rain water.a) During monsoon we get enough rain water. Project for collecting rain water must be promoted. In houses we can collect rain water in tanks on our terrace and through pipes the water can be used after purification. In fact the occupants in an apartment can do the same thing for which funds can be shared by inmates. In colonies, five or ten houses can jointly install rain water harvest system. The water can be shared. Perhaps, in colonies self governing bodies may provide necessary funds. If it is implemented we can be self sufficient as far as water requirement is concerned. 2. Another disaster we faced during last couple of years was heavy flood. As a result, backwaters and canals are filled with sand and mud. Hence, the flow of water in rainy season is blocked. Such deposites have to be removed periodically to enable freeflow of water. Necessary awareness also should be given to the people. 3. Another problem of Kochi is dumping food waste and plastic waste in public places. This practise should be prevented by the authorities. There is a project of producing cooking gas from the food waste. This should be propagated among the people. Plastic waste should be taken off once a week without delay. 4.Another problem of Kochi is mosquito. Dengue is caused by mosquito. People should be made aware of emptying vessels, coconut shells somade aware of emptying vessels, coconut shells so that they do not hold water for the mosquitos to lay eggs. Self governing bodies should make arrangements to spray required germicides in the drains. Fogging should be done at each corner of the city. Especially in colonies. 5. Now because of lock down, government is strict on maintaining the safety of the state. As such the beggers are also protected. We are happy to say that the beggars and the people who have nobody to look after are given shelter and care in our Ekm Govt Girls high school. There they are safe.They are given food and shelter . Our request to the District authority is that these people must be cared even after "lockdown" they must be taken to safe places. We are proud to say that the poor and the needy in the city are being taken care of. Begging must be prevented even after the process of lockdown. Attention and care has to be continued to help such people. Now, we put forward some of our ideas to the authorities 1. Self governing bodies should be sincere to the community. When sanctioning new buildings they have to think the availability of water, drainage scheme. There should be a social commitment. construction of flats and apartments should be controlled. 2. Rain water collecting system should be promoted.2. Rain water collecting system should be promoted. Seriousness should be given to the disposal of food and plastic waste.
