HYGIENE

“Hygiene refers to the conditions and practices that help to maintain health and prevent the spread of diseases”. -World Health Organization (WHO)

Hygiene is a broad term. Throughout our life, we come across different types of hygiene. There are personal hygiene, mental hygiene, sleep hygiene etc. and we as human beings are meant to keep these hygienes throughout our daily life routines. It includes such personal habit choices as to how frequently to take a shower or bath, wash hands, trim fingernails, and wash clothes. Some regular hygiene practices may be considered as good habits by society, while the neglect of hygiene can be considered disgusting, disrespectful or threatening.

Today, our world is facing a big enemy. The pandemic that has completely flipped our lives, COVID-19. Every day, millions of people are fighting for their lives. Self-hygiene or personal hygiene has a very important role in this fight. According to WHO, personal hygiene is one the ways to prevent the spread of the virus. It is advised to wash our hands frequently with soap and water or to use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Covering our nose and mouth while coughing or sneezing is also helpful.

Poor personal hygiene can lead to side effects such as body odor and greasy skin. they can lead to more troublesome issues too. For example, if we don't wash our hands frequently, we can easily transfer germs to our mouth or eyes. Not brushing our can lead to plaque buildup. Poor hygiene habits can also affect our self-esteem. Looking and feeling presentable can give us a confidence boost and sense of pride in our appearance.

Next is Mental hygiene. It is the practice of trying to maintain mental health through proactive behavior and treatment. Optimism can help maintain mental hygiene. In my case, telling myself that "I can do it" in tough situations has helped me numerous times. Living in a comfortable and supportive environment is also equally important.

Sleep hygiene is an important factor in daily routine. Practicing to spending an appropriate time in bed sleeping is necessary for our health. Avoiding the use of excess caffeine, nicotine, alcohol and chemicals can help us sleep better. Sleeping when we feel tired and not being an owl at night is important too.

There is so much more hygiene we need to follow and all of them are equally important. They help us live a healthy life. Because indeed, healthy life heels more than doctors prescribed medicines.
