DEVELOPMENT & ENVIRONMENT
Environment is the sum total of all living and non-living factors surrounding an organism, with which it interacts. Each organism depends on the environment for its sustenance and conversation. This relationship between each organism is so subtle that we are not aware of the immense complications. The environment and the organism are both the products of continuing process of universal change and forms of life that exist today, including man, are the outcome of millions of years of evolutionary process influenced by the environment.
The environment that we live today is not same as several decades before. In the name of development, the man has been interfering with the environment and pollution it. The increase in population associated with development of science and technology has been a serious threat to global ecological balance. Besides polluting, meet the needs of increasing population, man has been excessively exploiting the underground water, forests, wildlife and other resources thereby destroying these vital resources.
Environmental pollution is turning out to be a global issue threatening all species of life including man. The various health hazards and the threat caused to both flora and fauna by these pollutants have been a serious issue. Today there is a growing concern about the need conservation of environment.
The recent air pollution caused huge damage to capital city of India. The air quality in Delhi, the capital territory of India, according to a WHO survey of 1650 world cities is the worst of any major city in the world. Air pollution in India is estimated to kill about 2 million people every year; it is the fifth largest killer in India. In Delhi, poor air quality irreversibly damages the lungs of 2.2 million or 50 percentage of all children. Delhi pollution problem is caused by the factor of animal agriculture, smog and other harmful particles are produced by farmers burning their crop in other states.
Major impacts like global warming, ozone layer depletion and other major climatic changes have become a global issue. The world environment day is celebrated on 5th June of every year to create awareness among public. The issue have been raised in mass media as well. Environmental awareness campaigns are also held at various levels. Global summits are also held every year. In India Chipko movement is a major forest conservation movement that has triggered the concept of conservation of forest as a major step towards the conservation of environment.
A new strategy if development called ‘Sustainable Development’ with minimal degradation was advocation. It is realized that development should be done only at steady and gradual pace and that there is enough good quality water, air and land left for posterity. Also sustainable energy management is another essential part of achieving sustainable development.
Efforts for conservation and sustainable utilization of natural resources, afforestation, control and management of industrial and related pollution, wasteland development, conserving wildlife, use of bio fertilizers etc…. must be accelerated for the betterment of our environment. By keeping the environment clean we can tight against the diseases. To stay healthy and safe our premises must be kept clean and tidy.
Man should learn to live in harmony with nature and not as its exploiter. Let’s sustain nature and make it clean for the good being of our future generation. Let’s unite for this mission.
