TREATMENT THROUGH PLASMAPHERESIS Plasmapheresis treatment is the hot topic in recent news, as ICMR has approved its treatment in Kerala. On this occasion I would like to share my little knowledge about the Plasmapheresis. The meaning of the Greek word apheresis is to "Separate Blood". Apheresis is a medical technology in which the blood of a person is passed through an apparatus that separates out one particular constituents and return the remaining to the circulation. It is thus an extracorporeal therapy.Until the innovation of apheresis machine a person voluntarily draws blood and used for transfusion or made into biopharmaceutical medication by a process called fractionation. There are basically two types of centrifugation method Continuous flow centrifugation. Intermitted flow centrifugation. At present we use intermittent flow centrifugation method.Intermittent flow centrifugation works in cycles; taking blood, spinning or processing it and then giving it back the unused part to the donor in bolus. Let us understand how it works 1)Apheresis machines are wheeled to the bedside or donor's chair. Operator connects the sterile tubing settings also called pheresis set to the patient or donor. 2)As the patient's blood is pumped into the machine an anticoagulant is automatically added and the blood enters the chamber. 3) Blood components are separated using centrifugation or filtration method .The method of separation depends upon the product that is to be removed or collected from the blood. 4)The blood is then returned to the patient via tubing or it is collected in bags often suspended from a pole for donation or for disposal. 5) A display and control panel allow the operator to program the unit and view process or alerts. By using this process we can collect compounds such as plasma, erythrocytes,platelets, leukocytes and stem cells. Therapy such as plasma exchange ,LDL apheresis (low density lipoprotein), photo apheresis, leukocyte apheresis, erythrocyte apheresis and thrombocyte apheresis are also possible with this machine. Hope plasmapheresis will give better result to covid-19 patients.
