WHALES AND DOLPHINS An ocean is not just a vast expanse of water. It is a world in itself. The ocean cntains about 97 per cent of all the water on Earth, and covers 70 per cent of the earth's surface. Here ,there are mountains and valleys, volcanoes,and deep canyons beneath the surface of the water. In fact,in some places, the ocean is deeper than the tallest mountains on land! The ocean is also home to a mind boggling variety of life. There are underwater forests of kelp and seaweed, magnificent reefs of coral, aqnd millions of animals from the microscopic plankton,to huge whales. The ocean provides us food in the form of fish and shelfish. It is used for transportation,mined for minerals,and drilled for crude oil.
