St. Mary's Forane Church Koratty
St. Mary's Forane Church, commonly known as the Church of Koratty Muthy, is a significant Christian pilgrimage site located in the picturesque village of Koratty in Thrissur, Kerala. Established in 1381, the church has a rich history and is deeply revered by devotees from various backgrounds. The church is dedicated to Mother Mary, affectionately known here as Koratty Muthy.
The annual feast, celebrated on the Saturday and Sunday following the 10th of October, is the highlight of the year, drawing thousands of pilgrims. During this time, the statue of Koratty Muthy is carried in a grand procession, and the poovankula, or bunch of plantain, is offered as a special tribute. The church's structure, rebuilt in the Portuguese style in the late 18th century after Tippu Sultan's attack, was later reconstructed in 1987 with the Sacred Heart at the centre of the main altar, which is adorned with wooden frames of the 12 apostles.
A striking feature of the church is the intricately carved door depicting Mother Mary, complemented by artwork on the walls that illustrates key events from her life. Known as Poovankula Matha, or 'Our Lady with the Poovan Bananas,' the church is a cherished spiritual destination, second only to Velankanni in Marian pilgrimages in India.
