COVID-19

.......And then 2020 began with joy and merry. Somewhere in the corner of China, there was a number of reported cases of a strange and novel viral disease spread by a virus named 'corona'. The viral disease was often named as COVID – 19 (Corona Virus Disease) which is said to be originated from a seafood market in Wuhan. This strange new virus outbreak took its form for the first time in Wuhan in the month of November in 2019. The common men of rest of the world paid no attention and developed a thought - “That is a local native virus outbreak which will come to an end soon”. People paid no attention and treated the outbreak as a mere joke. A pneumonia of unknown cause was detected in Wuhan as the first case. The transmission accelerated to a greater degree and the outbreak was declared as a public health emergency of international concern in January 2020. International health organisation asked each nation to develop strategic preparedness and response plan. The social media censoring began and people now started to accept the seriousness of this dangerous epidemic. The spread and transmission intensified and the rate accelerated like anything. The infected ones were quarantined and isolated.

And then the first case outside China was reported in Thailand. Situation became worse. Soon Japan reported its first case followed by other countries. China denied the evidence of human – to – human transmission of COVID – 19. Later, doctors in Wuhan began to see the evidence of community transmission, but still China denied. Meanwhile a death of doctor named 'Li Wenliang' who tried to warn about the corona virus outbreak has sparked widespread public anger and grief in China. By then Wuhan had 800 reported cases and 25 deaths. Wuhan and Hubei were then subject to complete lockdown and China started accepting the seriousness of the epidemic. By the end January, there were nearly 11000 reported cases and 250 deaths in China. Partial travel restrictions were imposed in some countries to prevent transmission. On 30th January, India reported its first case in Thrissur, Kerala, which rose to three cases by third February. By the third month of 2020 the world was affected and in many countries like China, Italy, USA, UK, Spain Germany, Brazil etc the concentrated efforts of the government and the non- government organisations against the pandemic were of no use.

COVID – 19 affects the respiratory system of a human being . Common symptoms include fever, tiredness, dry cough, etc and some people may experience aches and pains, nasal congestion, runny nose/sore throat, etc. The situation is pathetic in many countries like USA, Italy, China, Spain, France, etc. Thousands and thousands of people are affected, hospitals are overcrowded with their inadequate casualties and treatment facilities. The condition is extremely miserable where a large number of people die each and everyday. Even the so called 'angels of god' ie doctors and nurses are unable to provide treatment to this extremely huge uncountable population nor they can save their own lives. There is no vaccination, no protocol, the only solution is to prevent it by increasing immunity level.

The situation is quite different in India. India reported its first case by the end of January in Kerala. Here the central government as well as the state governments are extremely efficient. The government of Kerala, particularly received international recognition for the adoption of well-organized, timely measures in a very systematic manner. Kerala is appreciated and admired from every corner of the world for bringing mortality as well as transmission under control and showing the way. The Indian government has well acted, supporting its state governments by all means. Comparing to other nations, India performs in an extra ordinary manner trying to get the control over deaths and mortality as well as the rate of spreading. The Prime minister announced complete lockdown throughout the nation with strict regulations to be followed by each and every citizens. It is said that prevention is better than cure. Each one should protect themselves and others around by taking appropriate precautions. These precautions include :

  • Wash your hands often using an alcohol- based hand – rub.
  • Maintain safe distance from anyone who is coughing or sneezing.
  • Avoid contact of hands with eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Use face mask and avoid unnecessary visit to hospitals.
  • Stay home and avoid crowds.
  • Consult a doctors if feeling unwell.

The pandemic took its worst form, affecting nearly 210 countries in an extremely dreadful manner and people started working selflessly irrespective of caste, religion, gender and political party. As there are two sides for a coin, the main positive side of this outbreak is gradual reduction of global warming and pollution. Let us pray and work for better COVID – 19 free countries. Let us all stay safe at home, quarantine ourselves, obey the regulations and precautions to break the chain of this virus.
